GENERAL INFORMATION
• What set-up is needed?
Before we arrive on presentation day we need the following ready for us:
• Presentation room that can be darkened
• Large projection screen
• PA system (we bring our own microphones, which we will connect to your system)
• (2) 5-8 foot display tables
• (2) 3-prong extension cords
• What if we can’t completely darken our auditorium/presentation room?
Our images are the most dramatic in a totally darkened room. If you can’t completely darken your room, our digital projection system has an extremely high light output that will still project and be seen even in rooms that can’t be darkened completely. If you have any concerns about your room, please contact us.
• What do you bring?
We are like a field trip that comes to you! We are a two-person (husband & wife) show with lots of exciting things to show your audiences. We always supply our own wide-screen, digital projection system and wireless microphones. Depending on the program you choose what we bring may include one-of-a-kind, specially designed props, specimens, biological models, museum replicas, costumes, banners, backgrounds, state-of-the-art scuba diving equipment, underwater scooters, underwater cameras, and life-sized (or larger-than-life-sized) inflatable animals.
• How far do you travel?
We will be happy to come to you no matter where you are. (We have done our presentations for audiences across the U.S. and all over the world.)
• Are there additional travel fees?
We try to keep things simple for you to book us by not charging travel fees. We do this by block-booking schools or libraries in your area. If you can book during our tour to your area, we can avoid charging you additional travel fees. If you want us to visit your school or library and we have no tour scheduled for your area, then additional travel fees may apply if you live outside of Southern California.
• Do you fly or drive?
For most programs we drive to your site anywhere in the U.S. since we usually bring lots of props/specimens, biological models, etc. Sometimes, due to time constraints, we must fly which could limit what we bring with us.
• How much do you charge?
Our fee depends on your location and numbers of programs. If you are out of the Southern California area we try to make our programs more affordable, by block booking, so we won’t have to charge additional travel fees.
• Do you have insurance?
Yes. We have a 1 million dollar liability insurance policy.
• What are your qualifications?
Wayne Brown is a professional underwater photographer, scuba diving instructor and marine biologist with a degree in ecology and environmental biology from the University of California at Irvine. Over 40 years of diving experiences have taken him around the world studying and documenting the earth’s marine environments and the creatures that inhabit them. He has been privileged to work with many respected institutions and individuals, including the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Aquarium of the Pacific, and the late Jacques Cousteau.
Wayne lived in the Caribbean Sea for over six years, returning to the U.S. to complete his degree in biology.
Wayne has brought the ocean to people of all ages and backgrounds through his work with the Education Department of the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, and as an onboard marine biologist for eco-tourism, small ship, expedition cruise lines around the world for 25 years.
Wayne is also an award-winning photographer with his work appearing in national and international adult and children's books, textbooks, magazines, web sites, and aquariums.
Karen Brown is a scuba diving instructor, underwater photographer, model, and marine educator with a degree in sociology from Wells College in Aurora, New York. Over 35 years of diving experiences have taken her around the world visiting and photographing the habitats and behaviors of a wide variety of marine animals. She has had close encounters with sea creatures large and small, from the most docile to the most dangerous.
While living in the Caribbean Sea and working as a scuba diving instructor, Karen introduced hundreds of people to the wonder and mystery of the underwater world.
In 1992, Karen joined Wayne to make The Ocean Adventure a family endeavor enthusiastically bringing the marine environment into the classroom.
Karen has brought the ocean to people of all ages and backgrounds through her work with the Education Department of the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, and as an onboard naturalist for eco-tourism, small ship, expedition cruise lines around the world for 25 years.
Karen works on both sides of the underwater camera, as an underwater model and award-winning photographer. Her photographs have appeared in national and international adult and children's books, textbooks, magazines, web sites, and aquariums.
• How many years have you been in business?
36 years. We started The Ocean Adventure programs in 1987.
• How do I schedule a program?
Contact us by email (programs@theoceanadventure.com) or phone ((949) 510-1070). We suggest that you have more than one date available for scheduling, in case the date you want is already booked.
• How far in advance should I schedule a program?
The further in advance you can schedule us the more likely you will be able to get the particular date you would like. Some of our clients book us a year in advance. Many schools book during the summer for the following school year.
• How do I get more information?
Contact us by email (programs@theoceanadventure.com) or phone ((949) 510-1070). We will be happy to answer your questions and/or send you a color brochure.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMS
• Do you bring live animals?
We do not bring live animals for these reasons:
1. The animals that we present during our “expeditions” are too large to bring with us.
(Many are too large and/or endangered for any aquarium even to have on site!)
2. We are not at our home base long enough to care for any live animals.
3. We are not equipped to travel with live animals.
4. Most live aquatic animals that could be brought to schools have very short life-spans and die very quickly because of being transported and handled.
• Is this a video or slide show?
Neither. It is a high-energy, multi-media show that incorporates stunning underwater visuals, both digital video and stills, using a 4K digital projection system, and also includes the use of props, models, specimens, inflatable animals, etc.
• Do you offer virtual programs?
Yes. All of our programs are available as virtual programs. You may choose from Live or Pre-recorded. (NOTE: Due to studio limitations our life-sized inflatable animals are not shown.)
• How is your program presented?
Before we arrive we supply you with curriculum materials for each show that can be used to prepare your audiences for our program so they are ready for their adventure before we begin. We present our program as a husband and wife marine biologist/underwater explorer team. We take your audiences with us as we relive one of our actual underwater, marine biology expeditions.
Part 1 THE BIOLOGY: The first part of the program reveals the biology of the animal(s) and environment that we will be studying during the expedition and the technology we will need to visit these animals and their habitat. We use 2-5 student volunteers for this part of the program. This may be accomplished using props, specimens, models, costumes, and diving equipment.
Part 2 THE “EXPEDITION”: The second part of the program takes your audiences diving with us as we relive our expedition using the breath-taking underwater photography/videography that we have taken during our expedition. During our dive your audience will see for themselves the beauty, wonder and mystery of the undersea realm. They will have fascinating close encounters with strange and unique sea creatures that reveal their interrelationships with each other and to humans. Exciting face-to-face encounters with “dangerous” marine animals will dispel many of their myths.
Part 3 THE SURPRISE: As time allows, at the end of each presentation we have a surprise that relates to the expedition. Five of our programs have the sudden appearance of one of our life-sized (or larger than life-sized) inflatable animals.
Also, as time allows we have a question-and-answer session where we answer questions from your audience.
• Is your program interactive?
Yes. At schools the interaction begins before we arrive, when you receive our free Teacher’s Guide and Student Workbook. The Teacher’s Guide contains hands-on, cross-curricular, standards-based activities that teachers can do with their students before we arrive at the school. After the program the Teacher’s Guide has lots of follow-up, hands-on classroom materials, too.
During our show we use student volunteers and interact with the audience throughout the program. We find that with the fun and fast-pace of our program our audiences are always very responsive. If time allows we also have a question-and-answer period at the end of our program. If time allows we can also have a hands-on time as our audience is filing out of the room.
• How long is each presentation?
Each presentation is 45-60 minutes in length. (Our programs can be modified to last from 30-90 minutes in length.) In schools we prefer 60-minute time slots since this allows students time to enter and exit the room, without taking time from the presentation. In other venues (libraries, museums, Family Fun Nights, summer camps, fairs, etc.) each presentation will usually last a full 60-minutes.
• What makes your programs unique?
Our programs are about us and our encounters with marine life around the world. All the photos/videos we show in our programs are photos/videos that we have taken on location. The information we present about the marine environment is from what we have learned from our years exploring and studying the underwater world. WE ARE THE REAL EXPLORERS! We are not presenters hired, given a script and sent out from a local aquarium or nature center.
• How many programs are available?
We currently have nine different programs (expeditions
) to choose from, all based on our actual, world-wide, underwater marine biology expeditions.
• Can we have two different shows on the same day?
Yes, but there will be an additional charge and we will need time to tear down and set-up between different shows.
• Do you offer outdoor programs?
Yes, but without The Expedition
part of the program that uses our 4K digital projection. In our outdoor programs we don't show pictures/videos, but use more props and equipment. Not all of our programs are available to be presented outdoors. Please contact us for information on how we can work with you in presenting our programs at your outdoor venue.
• Can you create a program just for us?
Yes. We have world-wide experiences and thousands of images and hours of video footage that we can use to create a special program just for your audience. Due to the production time involved there is an additional charge. Please contact us with your request.
• Do you offer Family Fun Night programs?
Yes. Because our programs are about our actual expeditions and our close-up marine life encounters we find that our programs appeal to adults as well as kids.
• Do you offer programs for summer camps?
Yes.
• What groups do you offer programs for?
Schools, after-school programs, libraries, museums, aquariums, nature centers, summer camps, boy scouts, girl scouts, blue & gold dinners, birthday parties, photo clubs, conventions, churches, retirement villages, community centers, cruise ships, etc.
