Meet the Manatee People

Meet Mr. Steve Rees:

Hair: Brown

Eyes: Brown

Married: Yes

Kids: Three children, ages 8, 5 and 9 months

Education: Graduated from Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia in 1991.

Job Title: Police Officer

Employer: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

How long on job: 3 years

Previous Job Experience: Security guard at the Republican National Convention in Dallas.

What my job is: At night we take the police boat out and patrol the commercial fishing boats. In the day we patrol looking for speeding violations and for people trespassing in the manatee sanctuaries. We also maintain the signs and ropes on the sanctuaries.

Also, I am a defense tactics instructor. I teach police officers how to hand-cuff, how to use pressure points, and how to take a criminal down to keep him under control. I am also a firearms instructor.

What I like best about my job: Since I was brought up in Florida I enjoy being in a boat out on the water. I like knowing that I am making an impact on our depleting resources. Through our work here, and educating the public, we can save our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

What don't like most about my job: Paperwork!

Advice for kids who would like to have a job like mine: I recommend that you go to college and study criminal law or wildlife. Then you can go to The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center for ten weeks of police training.
