After boarding our shuttle van our driver drove from San Diego, 30 minutes to the U.S. - Mexico International Border Crossing. We all had to get out of the van with all of our gear and walk across the border after showing our U.S. passports to a Mexico Customs officer and having all of our bags searched.
On the other side of the border, in Tjuania, Mexico, our van was waiting for us and we had to load all of our gear back in the van for the 1 1/2 hour drive to Ensenada.
As we traveled south along the coast of Baja California we could see the Coronado Islands. We have dove at these islands several times because these islands are one of the best places to see, play with and photograph seals and sea lions. Even though seals and sea lions are food for Great White Sharks we have never seen any Great White Sharks when we have been diving around these islands.
There could be several reasons why Great White Sharks do not visit the Coronado Islands...Maybe the islands are too close to the mainland and there is lots of boat traffic in the area. The water near the the mainland is more polluted than in Southern California and Great White Sharks do not like polluted waters. Maybe the Great White Sharks prefer the deeper and cleaner water around Guadalupe Island with very little boat traffic.
After a pleasant drive down the coast of Baja California about 10:30 am we arrived at the Ensenada Marina and found our dive yacht, Socorro Aggressor, docked and waiting for us!
We are all excited to board our expedition yacht and start our Mexico Great White Shark Expedition!
