Great White Sharkapalooza! Location: Guadalupe Island, MEXICO
11 am
Day 4
by Wayne & Karen Brown |
This will be our last day at Guadalupe Island!
It looks like we are leaving at a good time because Rana tells us that some rough weather is heading our way! Even though the sea is not rough the sea conditions are not as calm as they have been since we arrived.
Rana tells us that today our diving will finish at 1:30 pm since we are leaving for the long voyage back to Ensenada.
Even though today is a shorter day for diving we will be able to dive until the cages are pulled out of the water because some of the other divers do not want to dive today!
Today it seems like the sharks know that we will be leaving soon because they are really putting on a show for us. On the other days the shark action was continual with a relaxed pace. Today the sharks are moving around in a frenzy of activity! The sharks seem to be hyper-active. As we watch a shark coming towards us from one direction another shark surprises us by passing right in front of our faces from the opposite direction! We have to look all around us all time just to see where all the sharks are coming from!
The sharks also seemed bolder in trying to catch the fish floating near our cages! Their speed and boldness resulted in more successful catches for the Great White Sharks!
When sharks attack their prey they often try to protect their eyes in case their prey is struggling and might damage their eyes. Unlike other sharks, Great White Sharks do not have any eyelids so they can't cover their eyes for protection...so how do they cover their eyes?...Great White Sharks roll their eyes back in their heads so all you see are the white of their eyes! We saw the eyes rolled back on several Great White Sharks today during successful attacks on the dead fish we had for them.
Finally it was time for us to get out of the cage so the crew can haul out the cages and secure them before we can leave for Ensenada.
We its going to be a long rocky voyage and we won't get back to Ensenada until tomorrow! At least this will give us some time to edit our photos and videos...
