The Mexico Great White Shark Expedition - Expedition Equipment

Expedition Equipment

On The Mexico Great White Shark Expedition we are studying Great White Sharks by Guadalupe Island in the country of Mexico, off of Baja California, in the North Pacific Ocean.

Expeditions require various types of equipment. The type of equipment required depends on a number of things that include: season, weather, altitude, locations, duration, etc. We will only be scuba diving. All the these things must be considered as we plan on the equipment we will need to make complete our expedition.

Think about past explorers and their expeditions. What were the pieces of equipment these explorers took with them? If these same explorers were making their expeditions today what are the modern pieces of equipment that these explorers would probably take with them?

SCUBA Diving Equipment

MASK - This covers our eyes and nose lets us see clearly underwater.

WET SUIT - A rubber suit is worn to help keep us warm underwater and to protect us from getting cut or scratched. On our Mexico Great White Shark Expedition we wear a thick wet suit because the water here is cold.

WEIGHT BELT - A special belt that holds lead weights that help us sink underwater. Weights can be put on or taken off the belt to help us adjust whether we float or sink.

AIR TANK - A metal container that safely holds the air that we breathe underwater. Since we will only be in anti-shark cages we will not be wearing air tanks as we normally do. The air tanks will be outside of our cage and an extra long hose will connect to our regulator mouthpiece.

REGULATOR - This gives us air from our air tank. We connect the regulator to the air tank and breathe from the regulator mouthpiece.

Underwater Camera Equipment

SEA & SEA HOUSING FOR NIKON D-810 CAMERA - A special waterproof aluminum case for our Nikon D-810 camera that allows us to take digital photos and video with our camera underwater.

HOUSING FOR DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA - A special camera for taking super wide-angle HD digital video and photos.

LIGHT AND MOTION SOLA VIDEO LIGHTS - Special lights designed for use with our underwater video cameras.

GOPRO VIDEO CAMERA - A small action camera designed for taking digital video and still pictures above and below water.

OLYMPUS TG-TRACKER VIDEO CAMERA - A small action camera designed for taking digital video and still pictures above and below water.

Above Water Camera Equipment

CANON HD DIGITAL VIDEO/STILL CAMERAS
- Special cameras for taking digital video and still pictures. One camera is used in our underwater housing and the other is used above water.

NIKON D-810 - A professional digital still and video camera.

NIKON CAMERA LENSES - Nikon cameras have different lenses that can be changed for taking digital video and still pictures of very large things, very small things, things far away or things very close up.

TRIPOD - A 3-legged stand that we can attach our camera to for taking pictures.

Computer Equipment

LAPTOP COMPUTER - On our expedition we use our computer to store and process the photos and videos we take, write our journals, record our data, and use it as a calculator. We will not be able to do a live, interactive website because we will not have Internet access at our remote location..

EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE - Our laptop internal hard drive is not large enough to hold all our photos and videos so this gives us extra storage space for our digital photos and videos.
