The Belize Whale Shark Expedition – Getting Ready

Getting Ready

Location: Irvine, California

August 2019
by Wayne and Karen Brown

We have spent this summer working in the Arctic in Norway, Greenland and Iceland on the first electric hybrid expedition ship - MS Roald Amundsen! This year in the Arctic was big for us because we saw narwhals for the first time!

We just returned from two months at sea and now we have to switch gears and get ready for our next expedition - The Mexico Great White Shark Expedition!

During our school visits over the years over one million students and teachers all across the U.S. have seen our program, The Australia Great White Shark Expedition. With this new expedition we are going to be in the water with Great White Sharks again! When we first dove with Great White Sharks in South Australia that was the best place on the planet to get in the water and work with Great White Sharks! Since that time South Africa became the major destination to see and work with Great White Sharks. Both of these locations are on the other side of the planet from where we live. Now the best place on the planet to see and work with Great White Sharks is not too far from where we live in Southern California!

This time we will be traveling just over the California/Mexico border to the small island of Guadualupe in the Pacific Ocean 150 miles off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. So instead of flying for a day to reach Australia and driving for several days to reach Port Lincoln to board our boat, this time we will drive from out house to get board our boat!

When we went on our Great White Shark Expedition in South Australia we were on a small boat with just the captain, his mate and two Australian friends of ours. We were on our little boat for a 5 days less than 10 miles off the coast. In the 5 days we had on one day with a single Great White Shark!

On this Great White Shark Expedition we will be on a larger boat with a captain and several crew and several of our friends who have never been in the water with a Great White Shark ever! This trip will be a little shorter but further out to sea. We will be onboard our boat for 5 days as before, but 150 miles off the coast.

Another great thing about not having to fly is that we have NO baggage restrictions! This means we can take all the gear we want! On our Australia Great White Expedition we took our SCUBA gear and still and video cameras. This time we will not only have all of our still and video equipment, but an aerial drone to get video of the Great White Sharks around our boat, too!

We look forward to sharing our adventure with you on our Ocean Adventure Online Expedition!
