Cruising the Pacific Ocean

Location: Somewhere in the Central Pacfici Ocean (between Hawaii and Christmas Islands)

Day 13
by Wayne & Karen Brown

Clipper Odyssey is cruising southeast across the Pacfic Ocean. All around us, as far as we can see, is ocean. We are hundreds of miles from Hawaii and thousands of miles from the nearest continent. Odyssey is cruising at about 14 knots (about 16 miles per hour). At this speed we should reach our first scheduled stop at Christmas Island in about three days.

There is not a lot for us to do at sea because we are not diving, hiking or driving Zodiacs. During our time cruising at sea our expedition staff gives lectures about the history, culture and nature of the places we will be exploring. (Today we gave a talk about the fish we should be seeing during our diving and snorkeling stops we will be making during the expedition.)

Tomorrow we hope to be able to make an unscheduled stop at Palmyra Island. We have to get permission from the government of Kiribati (KEAR-AH-BAHSS) because they own this island. Palmyra is a protected island that is a nature preserve where no one lives, so they may not want us bringing 100 people to visit this island. We will let you know tomorrow if we get permission or not.

We had a relaxing day at sea today. After dinner we a great sunset to watch from Odyssey's deck.

Best Fishes,
