Getting Ready

Location: Irvine, California

December 2002
by Wayne and Karen Brown

We are preparing for our winter underwater expedition to explore the coral reefs, and sunken shipwrecks around the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Each expedition requires lots of planning and preparation. We are always trying to carry the maximum amount of stuff in the minimum amount of space. We are always having problems with the airlines not letting us bring all the equipment we want to take with us. Baggage restrictions may limit some of the equipment we were planning on taking with us. Of course we will have our laptop computer, underwater camera equipment, and scuba equipment. We still hope we have no problems bringing our underwater scooters on the expedition.

We are now on track to begin our expedition on December 20. We will fly from Irvine, California to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas Island in the US Virgin Islands. From there we will go to Virgin Gorda Island, BVI.

Thanks to Mike and Marcia Goldberg of Dive BVI, we will be spending a week in Virgin Gorda to dive with them and investigate the reefs and wrecks around the British Virgin Islands.

After our explorations with Mike and Marcia we will board the Yorktown Clipper in St. Thomas to begin our explorations of both the US Virgin Islands and Britisth Virgin Islands from both land and sea. We get a good overview (and underview) of how these islands are similar and sometimes different. We will also get evaluate how life on each island may affect life underwater around that island.

We will try to visit the best and most interesting places to explore both underwater and on land. The Virgin Islands have so many fascinating and exciting places to study we have to be very picky about where we go and what we think you would like to see and learn about.

During our explorations to investigate the health of the coral reefs we will be in the sky, underwater, on island rivers, in mangrove forests and on deserted islands. In addition to our scuba diving explorations we hope to be flying, kayaking, and hiking. We will be going from high in the sky to deep underwater.

In addition to our expedition planning and research we have been gathering and checking our equipment and practicing the various adventure sports that will be part of our Internet Expedition. This summer we were kayaking on rivers deep in the forests of New Hampshire and Maine, and scuba diving in Russia, Japan, and the California Channel Islands.

We look forward to sharing our adventure with you on this year's Ocean Adventure Online Expedition!
