We are organizing and testing all our equipment, buying last-minute items, and trying to pack a house-full of equipment (cameras, computer, scuba diving equipment, underwater scooters) and clothing into six bags for our airplane trip tomorrow to the Virgin Islands and the start of our expedition.
We have finalized our expedition schedule so we have a plan of where we are going and when. Even after all our planning and preparation our expedition schedule can change because of boat, plane, or car troubles, changes in weather or sea conditions, or other things that can happen that we didn't plan on.
Here is our expedition schedule:
WEEK 1 - Arrive in the British Virgin Islands, scuba dive day and night around Virgin Gorda and some of the many large and small islands, cays and rocks. We will be studying the health of the coral reefs and trying to find out if anything is affecting the health of the reefs here. We will also be investigating shipwrecks to see how they have affected the coral reefs and how the animals have used to the wrecks as habitats. During our explorations we wil be keeping our eyes open for an evidence of the pirates that used to be around these islands.
WEEK 2 & 3 - We board our expedition ship, Yorktown Clipper, in the capitol of the US Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie, on St. Thomas. From here we leave to explore both the US and British Virgin Islands. We will investigate both and sea and land ecosystems of these islands. We will also be learning about the people, culture, and history and reporting back to you. One of the islands we will be visiting is the tiny island that was called "Treasure Island" in the book Treasure Island. (The movie Treasure Planet is made from the book Treasure Island.)
We have visited the Virgin Islands many times, but we have not been back for about two years. We are excited about returning to the Virgin Islands and showing you we these islands are so special. On an expedition nothing ever goes completely as we have planned, so we hope that the only surprises we have are good ones.
Welcome to the start of this year's adventure,
The Reefs, Wrecks and Pirates Expedition!
