Greetings from Belize!

Location: Belize City - Belize

Day 1
by Wayne & Karen Brown

Greetings from warm and sunny, Belize! We are here to start our expedition to study and photograph whale sharks during the feeding migration along the world's second largest barrier reef along the coast of Belize.

During our time here we will also try to show you the diversity of life on the coral reefs here and in the tropical raintforests. We will introduce you to some of the Belizian people and learn about the history and culture of Belize.

We arrived after a long flight from our home in Irvine, California. Our plane stopped in Dallas, Texas, where we changed planes and flew on to Belize City, Belize. We left Irvine at 6:45 AM and arrived in Belize at 2:50 PM. Belize is one hour ahead of California, in the Mountain Time Zone. (Subtract the one hour from our travel time and find out how long our trip to Belize was.)

At the Belize City Airport we were met by Vivienne Acosta. Vivienne is works for the Belize Tourism Board. Vivienne took us and all our equipment by pick-up truck to the Radisson Fort George Hotel. We will stay overnight here before we make the overland trip to the small village of Placentia, in southern Belize, which will be our base camp for our seach for whale sharks.

We walked around a small park near our hotel. The park only had a couple palm trees and was mostly covered with grass. Only a few people were in the park.

Some of the houses around the park were probably over 100 years old! Most are two or three stories tall and made of wood. Stairs lead up to the big raised porches in the front that are as long as the house! The houses are painted white and have red metal roofs and green window shutters. After our visit to the park we walked back to the ship to watch the sunset.

Before the sun went down we walked into town to see some of the old buildings.

And Its been a long day of traveling and we are tired so we go to bed to dream about coming face-to-face with the largest shark in the world!.

Welcome to our expedition to all our student adventurers.
