Same routine as yesterday. In fact everything today was the same as yesterday, but better! We saw whale sharks, but this time we had a very close encounter as a 40-foot long whale shark swam right by us! We also saw a couple of bull sharks, about 8-feet long! On the same dive we saw a shark considered by some to be the most dangerous shark and the shark that is the most harmless shark!
The bull shark was cruising along the bottom at about 100 down, near the underwater drop-off. I swam down to one and followed it a little ways but the shark totally ignored me a kept on swimming. The other bull shark saw me and quick spun around and swam away. Maybe it thought that I was a scary shark-eating man!
The whale shark today swam right next to us. It was so close that we could tell it was a female whale shark. Maybe the females come to Gladden Spit to eat as much as they can so that they can be ready to have babies!
After our exciting encounters with the bull sharks and whale shark we stopped for lunch inside the reef. After lunch we discovered more manatees here! And, they were friendly! The manatees yesterday were scared of us and swam away. These manatees swam around and kept coming back to us to check us out! After being able to get close to the manatees and spend some time with them we think that this is a mother and her calves. Even though manatees usually give birth to only one calf at a time, sometimes manatee mothers do give birth to twins. Maybe this is a mother with her twin boys.
We've had some great encounters with whale sharks at Gladden Spit and we expect to have more during our Belize expedition, but tomorrow we are taking a break from whale sharks and visiting one of the few atolls in the Caribbean Sea -- Glover's Reef. Glover's Reef is supposed to have some of the best diving in Belize, with lots of incredible underwater life.
Join us tomorrow and find out what we have found!
Best Fishes,
